NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Coast Guard evacuated two crewmen from an oil platform approximately 80 miles south of New Orleans, Nov. 9, 2009. The Coast Guard responded to a request to evacuate the men after a lift boat tied to the rig broke loose and damaged a walkway between a berthing platform and the main platform. Since a number of our own members are former military it is always a meaningful experience. We decided to make a different form of enrichment to give to Cameron and Zabu our male lion and white tiger that live in the same enclosure!The cardboard giraffe/gazelle was filled with small chunks of red meat to entice the big cats into action! Cameron was first on scene and didnt seem interested so Zabu had the enrichment all to herself.

In this video by the Coast Guard, two men are rescued in west Galveston Bay after their vessel was reportedly overtaken by waves Monday. A Coast Guard MH-65C helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Houston diverted to rescue the men after a Sector Houston watchstander receive a call from one of the mens family member shortly after 11 p.m. and reported them in distress. The two men, who left from Hitchcock, were able to contact the family member by cell phone when the incident occured. The family member then contacted the Coast Guard. HOUSTON - In this video released by the tank ship Krymsk response unified command, a DC3 aircraft deploys dispersant to an oil sheen 40 miles off of Galveston Oct. 21, 2009, after an estimated 18,000 gallons of fuel oil were spilled from the Krymsk Oct. 20, 2009. The unified command decided to deploy dispersant after determining that on-water oil recovery methods would not work due to weather conditions. Dispersants are products that are applied to the water surface in order to break up surface oil slicks, a process called dispersion, and facilitate the movement of oil particles into the water column. SAN DIEGO -- Crews from Coast Guard Sector San Diego rescued three people after their 21-foot boat became disabled 27 miles southwest of San Diego Monday, Oct. 19, 2009. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew spotted the boaters in distress around 10 p.m., and a 33-foot rescue boat from Station San Diego was launched. The boat crew found the boaters experiencing severe sea sickness and dehydration, and transported them to Shelter Island, where they were transferred to Emergency Medical personnel in good condition.
